We’re Focused on What Matters Most Right Now in Shawnee County
At Junior League of Topeka, we live in the moment. To us, that means adjusting our focus according to our community’s most pressing needs. Our work is always evolving, and that keeps us on our toes, striving for progress, and preparing to take on whatever comes next.
In April of 2023 the Junior League of Topeka adopted a new issue area of Women’s Health. This was the culmination of a year’s worth of research, education, and discussion surrounding the needs of Shawnee County. We spent the next year incorporating various projects and volunteer opportunities related to women’s health equity while continuing to research community needs and expand relationships with organizations serving the women of Shawnee County. During this period we organized and donated over 62,000 toiletry and menstrual items to The Hope Center at the Topeka Rescue Mission and the YWCA Center for Safety and Empowerment to support women in our community. Additionally, our members received education on period poverty on both a global and local scale. In April 2024, we formed a Community Advisory Committee comprising key members from diverse community organizations to further research and identify specific needs within women’s health equity. The committee recommended expanding our focus on period poverty in Shawnee County through period supply donations and education.
Our members are excited and ready to continue and expand on this important work, which is already creating a tangible impact on our community. With their enthusiasm and commitment, we are poised to make even greater strides in addressing women’s health equity and making a lasting difference in Shawnee County.
Our goal is to help Topeka women develop civic leadership skills through the work they do, then put those talents to work in the communities that need it. Our current focus of women’s health equity, focusing on period poverty, gives women opportunities to grow while positively impacting the communities where they live and work.
We’re Creating Fulfilling Leadership Opportunities Throughout Shawnee County
Junior League of Topeka offers so much more than local volunteering opportunities! Our League of leaders creates real change by advancing social activism-focused projects that directly benefit the communities of Shawnee County. By giving women the tools to lead, educating them about their communities’ needs, and helping them put their unique brand of creativity and skill to work, Junior League of Topeka is making a big impact on Shawnee County.
We’re Transforming Topeka Communities By Challenging the Status Quo
No matter what we’re currently focusing on, the Junior League of Topeka’s work centers around improving our local communities through effective action and leadership. We have identified women’s health equity as the most pressing issue in our community right now, and we are helping local women take action to resolve it. In the last two years, we have donated over $15,000 worth of period and toiletry supplies to support women in our community. We believe that these impactful actions have the power to bring us closer to our goal of decreasing period poverty in Shawnee County.
